By Shakira Choonara
on September 11, 2014

Election Statement: ‘As a young individual I hope to be that fresh and determined voice which will stand not as an individual but as a representative of all of you, to bring together our valuable research and insight and translating it into knowledge, policy improvements and ultimately building a global movement which will lead to affordable, accessible and quality healthcare for all’.

Who am I & What do I hope to Achieve

Being from a disadvantaged background myself, every action throughout my life has been to improve the lives of the disadvantaged as well as fight against what is wrong in the world. At both a school and university level I was involved in and served as a student leader in a number of organisations which were geared towards fighting the stigma surrounding persons with disabilities as well as organizing and contributing a number of charity initiatives. I am presently involved in fighting racism and sexism in South Africa through the extraordinary Apartheid struggle icon’s youth leadership programme (Ahmed Kathrada who spent 26 years in prison along Nelson Mandela to liberate the people of SA).

I have dedicated my life thus far to carrying out health research in developing countries and will continue to do so until I see changes in health systems which are needed to ensure that people no longer suffer, turned away or experience poor quality care and receive the care that they deserve; that is until health as a human right is realized for every individuals across the world. I have also been selected to participate in the prestigious 2014 Emerging Voices Programme which I hope to further by serving on the Health Systems Global Board. As a young individual I hope to be that fresh and determined voice which will stand not as an individual but as a representative of all of you, to bring together our valuable research and insight and translating it into knowledge, policy improvements and ultimately building a global movement which will lead to affordable, accessible and quality healthcare for all.

Looking forward to being at your service!
